It is said that a photograph says a thousand words. I am renewing my resolve to take one photo per day for an approximate total of 365,000 unspoken words.

Tuesday, August 31, 2010: Julien et Barack

My French friend, Julien

Julien (my waiter from the first two nights in Paris) and I went to a café in my neighborhood tonight.  He gets off work early on Tuesdays.  His English is incredible, and he wants to help me improve my French.  I am really looking forward to making my French better, but I just don't have the time now.  My favorite quote from Julien tonight was, "How do you say the wife of the beef?"  He was searching for the word "cow." :)

Saturday, August 28, 2010: Notre Dame

Lovers Lock Bridge

Took a walking tour of Notre Dame today.  We went over this bridge.  Couples come to the bridge to commit to each other.  They put the padlock on and throw the key over the bridge into the Seine.  Some people got really into it and had the locks engraved, others wrote on theirs with marker or nail polish, and other locks had no names at all.  So romantic.

Sunday, August 23, 2010: Walking tour

L'Opéra Garnier.

I took a walking tour through Paris this afternoon.  We started at L'Opéra Garnier, and ended at Place de Concorde.  The statue on the left of the arch of four naked women dancing around one naked man was not well received when it was first unveiled.

Sunday, August 15, 2010: Family BBQ

Newlyweds! My cousin, Kacie and cousin-in-law, Mark

My cousin, Kacie Lauren, called me a few weeks ago, and told me that she wanted to have a little going-away party for me.  And yesterday, we had the gathering at Aunt Kathy's.  It was so nice.  Kacie and her husband Mark were there--still glowing from their honeymoon tans!--Kourtney, Aunt Kathy, Breanna, Uncle Michael, Uncle Ray, Aunt Karen, Bob, Mom, Dad, Hondo and I were all in attendance.  We had hamburgers, hot dogs, crabs, deviled eggs, potato salad, brownies and cake and washed it all down with sweet tea or Arnold Palmers.  It was a lovely way to spend one of my last days in New Jersey.

Friday, August 13, 2010: Eat, Pray, Love Opens

Jen: Eat, Me: Pray, Debbie: Love.

What an amazing journey Elizabeth Gilbert chronicled in her memoir Eat, Pray, Love.  I am not really much of a reader, but I did catch this one (well, on CD in the car).  It was so beautiful of Liz to "let us in" to her personal journey to peace and self-discovery.  Immediately after losing my job, my gut was telling me to take it as an opportunity, and told my self countless times, "Now you can go live in Europe."  That could have easily been just a pep-talk, but it is about to become a reality for me.  A huge part of my decision to actually make it happen was a direct result of my exposure to this book.   The book touched me and reached me on a very real level.  I don't have that much in common with Liz Gilbert.  Let's put it this way...I am not a Yoga person,  I have no desire to meditate, visiting India or an ashram hold no allure for me, and my chakras are definitely not "aligned," okay?  And yet, her story--the humanity and spirituality and faith shared in her story--was so easy for me to relate to.  The movie made a good effort to be true to the book, but it really can't touch the "magic" that the book exposes the reader to.

I'll end with an excerpt from the book that moves me.
"My thoughts turn to something I read once, something the Zen Buddhists believe. They say that an oak tree is brought into creation by two forces at the same time. Obviously, there is the acorn from which it all begins, the seed which holds all the promise and potential, which grows into the tree. Everybody can see that. But only a few can recognize that there is another force operating here as well - the future tree itself, which wants so badly to exist that it pulls the acorn into being, drawing the seedling forth with longing out of the void, guiding the evolution from nothingness to maturity. In this respect, say the Zens, it is the oak tree that creates the very acorn from which it was born.

I think about the woman I have become lately, about the life that I am now living, and about how much I always wanted to be this person and live this life, liberated from the farce of pretending to be anyone other than myself. I think of everything I endured before getting here and wonder if it was
me- I mean, this happy and balanced me, who is now dozing on the deck of the small Indonesian fishing boat-who pulled the other, younger, more confused and more struggling me forward during all those hard years. The younger me was the acorn full of potential, but it was the older me, the already-existent oak, who was saying the whole time-'Yes-grow! Change! Evolve!Come and meet me here, where I already exist in wholeness and maturity! I need you to grow into me!' And maybe it was this present and fully actualized me who was hovering four years ago over that young married sobbing girl on the bathroom floor, and maybe it was this me who whispered lovingly into that desperate girl's ear, 'Go back to bed, Liz...' Knowing already that everything would be OK, that everything would eventually bring us together here. Right here, right to this moment. Where I was always waiting in peace and contentment, always waiting for her to arrive and join me."

Monday, August 9, 2010: CELTA exercises

Non-native English

So, I have delayed posting this on my blog...but no longer.  I am going to Paris for six weeks to take a class to gain my CELTA certification to teach English as a foreign language.  I leave a week from tomorrow.  I have a series of exercises to do before I arrive, and this was one of them.  Number 4 cracks me up.  So funny.

Sunday, August 8, 2010: Phillies & DeLises!

Jon & Mrs. Labiner's Birthday!

I have been so fortunate to have an amazing summer....and it keeps getting better and better.  Today, I had a quiet breakfast with Hondo.  Then Jim, Tracey and Rileigh and I went to the best Phillies game I've ever been to.  They played the Mets and won 6 to 5.  It was action-packed!!  Most importantly, I think Rileigh had a great time.  She's such a doll baby.

Then, Jim and I went to see his family for his brother and Grandmother's joint birthday celebration.  Jon and Lindsay hosted a lovely party in their beautiful new home, and I got to spend a lot of great quality time with Jim's family.  I spent a great chunk of time playing with lovely, little Ella Sophia.  She's so mature, empathetic, and sweet.  She is such a big girl now, and is so excited for her sister to arrive in September.

It was an awesome day.

Friday, August 6, 2010: Brokenness

My good fortune symbol

I have decided that when I break a nail, I should be happy.  It means that good things are coming my way.  I broke my nail today on a visit to four young friends that I haven't seen for a little while, and I had a GREAT visit with them!  I got big hugs and kisses.  It was awesome.  Then, I went to the library to do some good work for my class.  Then I had an awesome time at Jackie's fondue party.  It was a great way to start the weekend...and it all started with my broken nail.

Wednesday, August 4, 2010: Kellsey!

Kellsey's 365,000 Words blog debut

This is my parents' dog, Kellsey.  She's an apricot, toy French Poodle.  And yes, she is snobby.  She's happiest around food--of people variety, primarily.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010: Salem County Fair

Baby cow at Salem County 4H Fair today

My aunt and I went to Cowtown today and then went to the Salem County Fairgrounds afterwards.  We saw cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits, and horses.  I stopped at the farm market on the way home.  It was fun to step into that world....and it's crazy that it's all here in New Jersey!  So far away from what I know, but so close in distance!

Monday, August 2, 2010: Farewell K-23

Farewell K-23.  You were good to me.

It was a good long run at my apartment.  I said the official "goodbye" to it today, and handed in my keys at 9:30 this morning.  I am so happy that I was so happy there for such a long time.  It was the place in which I spent the first years of my independent adult life.  Looking back, I am proud to have established it as my first home, and to have raised my ella from a puppy there.  I'm thrilled that the move-out process is over and I am ready for whatever the next phase of this journey has in store for me.
